Backstreet Boys postpone summer concerts
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The Backstreet Boys Monday postponed more than a dozen concerts over the next month, while member A.J. McLean undergoes treatment for clinical depression. The group said McLean, 23, has recently had anxiety attacks and had begun drinking heavily as a result of his depression, largely brought on by the recent death of his grandmother, with whom he was very close. The four other members in the widely popular group -- Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson -- said they wanted to be as "honest with our fans" about McLean's situation. "A.J. is our friend and our brother, and we wholeheartedly support him during this difficult time. Fortunately, A.J. has realized he can't solve his problems by himself," the members said in a statement. "Because he is unable to be on tour at this time, we are postponing dates and will make them up as soon as we can," the group added. "At the same time, we trust that our fans -- who've always stood by us -- will understand this decision is absolutely necessary in order for A.J. to be well. We look forward to seeing all of you on the road soon."
McLean, nicknamed "Bone" and "A.J.," is a singer who also plays the bass guitar and piano. The postponements went into effect immediately, beginning with Monday's show in Boston. The group is to return to the stage August 7 in Vancouver. Tickets already purchased will be honored at the rescheduled dates. Refunds also are available.
