Israel's 50th anniversary has sparked dozens of new Web sites, and the Internet provides nearly endless opportunities for exploring Jewish history and culture. Palestinians are also marking the anniversary online, and sites with an Arab point of view are plentiful. We've picked out a few sites that have the most to offer; all are in English unless otherwise noted.

Israel 50th Anniversary Sites
Israel 50/Ministry of Foreign Affairs
This is a comprehensive site about the 50th anniversary from Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, complete with a detailed year-by-year timeline and a calendar of events in Israel and around the world.
Israel at 50/Education Dept., Jewish Agency for Israel
This comprehensive site has as its centerpiece a history of the Arab-Israel conflict in maps. It is sponsored by the Education Department of the Jewish Agency for Israel, and includes an on-line exhibition of photographs of daily Israeli life through the years.
Truman Presidential Library
The Truman Presidential Library has an entire site about the Truman administration's recognition of Israel.

Historic Palestinian Post
The Jerusalem Post has put the original edition of the Palestine Post from May 16, 1948, online, complete with a cartoon. A real piece of history!

Israel Army Handbook
The Israel Army Handbook, compiled by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress and sponsored by the U.S. Army, is posted in its entirety on the Web. The handbook includes detailed information on Israeli history, political, defense and economy through 1988.

Al-Quds
Web site of Al-Quds, a Palestinian daily published in Jerusalem. In Arabic.
Kol Israel (Voice of Israel)
Artificia, a private Internet consulting firm, provides live streaming audio and video of Israeli radio and television news programs from Kol Israel (Israel's national radio network), Israeli T.V. (Mabat) and other organizations. Users must register to listen to or view the programs. Access to some programs is free. Artificia charges a monthly fee for full access to programs.
Arutz Sheva Israel National Radio
A politically conservative pirate radio network which broadcasts from a ship off the coast of Israel. Its self declared agenda "to combat the 'negative thinking' and 'post Zionist' attitudes so prevalent in Israel's liberal-left media." The Web site provides online news and streaming audio of Arutz Sheva daily news broadcasts, commentary and traditional music.

Center for Palestine Research and Studies
This is an independent center based in Nablus that researches Palestinian policies and politics.
Nakba
This special report from The Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center, a Palestinian arts and culture group based in Ramallah, marks the 50th anniversary of "al-nakba" Arabic for "the catastrophe." It includes testimonies from Palestinians who lost their homes in the 1948 War of Independence, a photo gallery and a calendar of events.
ArabNet Technology
An 1,800-page site with information on each Arab country in the Middle East and North Africa. The online resource is run by ArabNet Technology, a subsidiary of the company that publishes leading newspapers and magazines in Saudi Arabia, including Asharq Al-Awsat.

Israel at Fifty : A Tribute to Fifty Years of U.S.-Israel Ties
A Website commemorating Israel's 50th anniversary hosted by the
American Israel Public Affairs Committee, an Israel advocacy group
based in Washington, D.C. The site documents Israel-U.S. relations
over the past 50 years through photos of Israeli and American
leaders meeting through the years, text of historical documents, a
timeline and film clips. Visitors can also sign a global birthday card
for Israel.

From Jewishfamily.com, an online parenting site, a special section
on Jewish holidays including articles and columns on Israel's
Independence Day. Much of the same material can be found on

Orthodox Union Israel anniversary site
This commorative site from the Orthodox Union, which bills itself as
"The Cyber Home of Torah" features profiles of Israeli leaders, past
and present, essays from rabbis and scholars and links to other
Israel 50th anniversary sites. Visitors to the site can listen to daily broadcasts of Israeli Broadcast Authority television news via Real Audio. To listen to the broadcasts, use the "find" button on the home page to search for "IBA."
GAMLA
The Website of the non-profit organization, "Gamla shall not fall again," a right-wing organization focused on Israeli security issues and efforts to preserve Israeli interests in the occupied territories. The site is primarily a forum for discussion of these issues through letters from readers, editorials and commentary from Middle East scholars.
