August 5, 1996 Two dead, two wounded in mall robbery attemptDEPTFORD, New Jersey (CNN) -- A would-be robber and an armored car guard traded gunfire inside the Deptford Mall in New Jersey on Monday afternoon, as the robber apparently tried to rob the guard. When it was over, the guard was in critical condition, and a shopper and the gunman were dead. Two shoppers were caught in the crossfire. A 15-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition, and a male shopper was dead at the scene. The Deptford Mall is one of the largest in southern New Jersey. Advisory board studying Social Security overhaul
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A government advisory board studying ways to overhaul the giant Social Security system probably will issue its report in September, the panel's staff said Monday. The 13 members of the council are busy putting together three different plans, each involving investing some portion of Social Security contributions in the stock market, the staff said. Social Security funds are currently invested in special-issue U.S. Treasury securities. According to members, investing the system's billions in the stock market -- rather than solely in government bonds -- could gain bigger returns and thus help save Social Security from bankruptcy. The Social Security Administration predicts that the system will be bankrupt by 2013 unless major changes are made. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Fuhrman book in the worksLOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Former Los Angeles police Detective Mark Fuhrman has plans to follow in the footsteps of other players in the O.J. Simpson trial by writing a book, Fuhrman's literary agent, Lucianne Goldberg, told CNN Monday. Goldberg said the book should be available by early spring. According to Goldberg, Fuhrman's book will describe his entire involvement in the Simpson case, and will offer a "behind-the-scenes" look at things "nobody knows yet." Fuhrman will also offer an apology for using racial slurs. In the Simpson murder trial, Fuhrman testified that he found a bloody glove on Simpson's estate the day after Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were killed. He was later investigated for possible perjury when the defense entered excerpts from a screenwriter's tapes into the trial. The tapes showed Fuhrman used racial epithets repeatedly, although he had denied doing so under oath. NEW YORK (CNN) -- America West Airlines is expected to announce a six-day airfare sale Monday with tickets as low as $50 one way, The Wall Street Journal reported. America West, trying to fill a vacuum left when the FAA suspended ValuJet in the wake of the Everglades crash, said its one-way fares of $50, $100 or $150 would be based on the length of the trip. The fares will be available on nearly all of the airline's routes. The deepest cuts come on the carrier's late night/early morning flights through Las Vegas. Seating is limited, and tickets must be used before December 15, with some dates excluded. The sale ends Saturday.
