Nine soldiers face disciplinary action after racism probe

FORT BRAGG, North Carolina (CNN) -- Nine soldiers at the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg face possible discharge from the Army following a probe of possible racist activities in the elite paratrooper division.

The probe of extremist activity -- prohibited to soldiers -- began after three soldiers were arrested for the racially- motivated killings of two African-Americans on a Fayetteville street in December. Those three soldiers -- now facing first-degree murder or conspiracy charges in the deaths of Jackie Burden and Michael James -- are among the nine who could be kicked out.

A fourth is facing a court-martial after an unrelated shooting. The remaining five have already received some disciplinary action, including reduction of rank, extra duty or loss of pay.

Four other soldiers have already received written reprimands, been barred from re-enlisting or both.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN) -- Students at Salt Lake City high schools staged a walkout Friday, protesting the school board's ban of all extracurricular clubs to avoid having a lesbian and gay student club. (43K AIFF sound or 43K WAV sound)

400 students protested at East High School, while 200 walked out at West High and marched a mile to the state Capitol. Another 100 students watched the protest at East High, including a group of boys hoisting a sign reading "SAFE -- Students Against Faggots at East."

The school board voted 4-3 on Tuesday to ban all clubs, rather than permit a gay-straight student alliance at East High.

Also on Friday, the state legislature passed a bill prohibiting teachers from condoning illegal conduct in schools. The bill's opponents called it a swipe at gay clubs.
