Bomb blasts World Trade Center -- February 26, 1993
A huge bomb explodes in the garage below New York's World Trade Center, killing five people and forcing a hectic evacuation of some 50,000 people from the massive twin tower complex. More than 1,000 people are treated for injuries, most from smoke inhalation. Mohammed A. Salameh is later arrested in connection with the bombing as he tries to claim a refund on a rented van believed to have carried the explosion.

Waco compound burns -- April 19, 1993
A compound occupied by a religious cult burns to the ground in what is described as a mass suicide. The heavily armed Branch Davidians have been in a standoff with law enforcement officials near Waco, Texas, for 51 days. The compound catches fire hours after federal agents in armored vehicles begin battering the compound's walls and pumping tear gas into it. Eighty-six cult members, including Branch Davidian leader David Koresh, die in the flames.

Bobbitt vs. Bobbitt -- June 23, 1993
In Prince William County, Virginia, Lorena Bobbitt takes a butcher knife and cuts off her husband's penis as he sleeps. Police recover the organ from the roadside and it is surgically reattached to John Bobbitt, her husband. The wife is later charged with malicious wounding. In response to her accusations, John Bobbitt is indicted for sexual abuse.

NAFTA becomes law -- December 8, 1993
President Clinton signs into law the North American Free Trade Agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The pact, which takes effect January 1, 1994, lowers or eliminates tariffs and removes other trade restrictions between the three countries.
