TWA jetliner bursts into flames -- July 17, 1996
A Trans World Airlines 747 jetliner headed for Paris crashes in a ball of flames into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from New York's Kennedy International Airport. All 230 aboard TWA Flight 800 are killed in the accident, which is followed by a lengthy investigation and salvage effort.

Olympic park bombing -- July 27, 1996
A homemade pipe bomb explodes at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. The blast jolts the crowded park during a late-night concert, killing one, prompting another to suffer a fatal heart attack and injuring 111. The Summer Olympic Games go on, and the park reopens three days later under tighter security.

Bosnian elections -- September 14, 1996
Voters in Bosnia-Herzegovina cast ballots in the first nationwide elections since the end of its four-year civil war in 1995. Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic, a Muslim, is elected chairman of a three-man collective presidency. He is to be joined by the leader of the Bosnian Serb and Bosnian Croat communities.

Simpson civil trial begins -- September 17, 1996
O.J. Simpson's civil trial begins, but the proceedings are anything but a replay of the 1995 criminal trial. Judge Hiroshi Fujisaki bans cameras and restricts testimony that was allowed in the criminal courtroom. Many of the same witnesses from the first Simpson trial take the stand, but there is new testimony: O.J. Simpson for the first time tells a jury about the night his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were killed.
